Share with a friend

If you’re suffering from airborne allergies, there’s often not much you can do to control the quality of air outside. But when it comes to the air in your personal living space, you’ve got some options.

There are a variety of different air purifiers on the market that can be purchased to help rid your indoor air of pollen, animal dander, smoke or whatever pollutants are irritating your precious lungs.

Considerations

Air Filter Type

The first thing you’ll want to consider when choosing an air filter is actually the type of filter itself. It’s generally understood that HEPA air filters are the best. Why? Let’s take a look at what HEPA filters are.

What are HEPA Filters? HEPA stands for “high-efficiency particulate air.” Official HEPA filters must adhere to certain standards. The standard is that HEPA air filters are certified to remove at least 99.97% of particles (from large particles of around 0.3 microns) from the air. The end result is breathing in the air you want, and not the stuff you don’t.

HEPA filters, as defined by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) standard adopted by most American industries, remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers (µm) in diameter.

HEPA is the standard to beat and as such, we’re going to recommend going with an air filter that meets true HEPA standards
